ON THE POLICE ATTACK AND INVASION IN LIBERTATIA SQUAT ON NOVEMBER 8TH
NO PASARAN – NOSOTROS PASAREMOS !
On November 8th, 2019, at noon, while construction works were in progress in Libertatia squat, motorcycle police and Special Police Team for Crime Prevention and Suppression approached the squat and arrested the comrades who were standing outside and afterwards invaded the building, capturing the comrades who were inside. The eight comrades, who were arrested, were transferred to the police station. We should also mention that some of them were neither at the squat nor participate in the squat or the construction works.
A solidarity protest was immediately called outside the squat and, as soon as the police moved away, the people gathered re-entered the building in order to guard it from any new attack. Libertatia squat immediately called for a demonstration in solidarity with the arrested comrades, in which more than 150 people marched towards the police station where they were held.
In order to avoid any further unrest outside the police station, the police released four of our comrades and transported the other four to the General Police Headquarters. The comrades were charged with misdemeanor, related to the alleged illegal construction works at the building. It is obvious that this attack is part of the generalised repression the state is attempting to impose, promoted by the fascist governmental narrative, that aim to destroy social and class resistance, all the people of the struggle.
This attack is the continuation of the attacks and evictions that took place in Athens, against the squats of immigrants and refugees, who are ruthlessly repressed by the state, as well as the structures of the anarchist movement. Characteristic example of the uncontrollable operation of the riot police in Exarcheia is expressed lately by their attempt to invade a café in Exarcheia square and the arrest and abuse of a comrade.
Moreover, this attack is inextricably connected to the wider repressive campaign, which is expressed through the laws against worker unions, the laws aiming to the abolition of the rights in education and proceeds hand in hand with the fascist attacks, as the most recent one in a high-school in Neapoli /Thessaloniki, during which the fascists carved a minor refugee from Iran, threatening him not to attend school anymore. The explicit political relation of the state’s policies with the fascist rhetorics and actions is clearly underlined in the case of Libertatia squat, which is a point of reference to the antifascist struggle, as the police that covered the nazi’s arson attack during the nationalist rally on Macedonia issue on January 2018, now invades the building and arrests comrades. We should mention that no immediate arrests were made related to
the arson of the neoclassical building of Libertatia. On the contrary, there is a trial still pending against the five comrades who were arrested after the demonstration in solidarity with squat that took place right after the arson.
What has not been resolved by the parastate groups then – that is to destroy the structure and the comrades of the squat- is now attempted by the state itself. Once more, the brutality of totalitarianism, of the shields and the ruffians will be confronted by the raging resistance of the people that refuse to resign and keep on struggling. And it will be defeated.
