The targeting of political squats and housing squats of refugees and immigrants continues through successive news pieces in the Press, with the most recent police report like article in an electronic news site of Thessaloniki against Mundo Nuevo squat, while some time earlier the Open Social Space Scholeio(School) had also received threats by the Municipality of Thessaloniki.
At the same time, Rosa Nera squat in Chania, Crete is threatened with eviction because of profit-driven agreements made by the Polytechnic School of Crete (owner of the building) with businessmen of the tourist industry. The dean of the School himself, in the role a businessman, stated without shame that the intended repression of the squat will be “for the welfare of society”.
Previously, during the entire period, the repression propaganda against the squats had been intensified. The reports about eviction orders by the Public Prosecution for “Papoutsadiko” squat, “City Plaza” and the refugee housing squat “Zoodochos Pigi 119” in Athens, as well as the particular pressure exerted in the cases where the owners are university institutions, like Lelas Karagianni 37 and “vancuver” in Athens and “Evangelismos” in Heraclio, Crete all aim to criminalize the anarchist–anti-authoritarian character of these spaces as well as the active solidarity to refugees and immigrants.
Essentially, these press reports are fabricated and usually take the form of “exhortations” towards the government, while in reality they directly serve the plans of the state to create a repression framework. A similar media hysteria had been deployed the previous summer when right after the mobilizations of No Border in Thessaloniki three squats were evicted, Orphanotropheio (which was also demolished), Mandalideio and Hurriya. Besides, the signal for the recent repression wave was given by N. Toskas himself, minister of the SYRIZA-ANEL government through successive interviews and statements following the eviction of the squats Villa Zografou and Alkiviadou in Athens and Albatros in Thessaloniki, confirming thus the state plans for evictions, heralding the continuation of police operations and establishing the framework of the government ideological attack against the world of struggle.
The targeting and repression of squats is part of the overall attack of the state and bosses against social and class resistances which are developing against their murderous schemes. Refugees and immigrants are imprisoned in concentration camps and institutional racism is intensified – opening once more the ground for neo-nazi gangs and cultivating social cannibalism -, the life and dignity of workers and the unemployed is strangled by the attack of the capital with constant imposition of new measures of misery and submission, work accidents-murders by the bosses increase, class and social mobilizations are faced with police violence and slandering (like in the case of the strugglers for free public transportations booked by the police for distributing flyers), workers’ conquests such as the Sunday holiday are trampled down, exhausting convictions are imposed based on “imaginative” scenarios coming from the anti-terrorist force, while public spaces and the natural environment are looted and commercialized.
In this clash between the vultures of power and the world fighting for freedom, equality and dignity, the squats are not only refuges but also springboards to promote solidarity, self-organization and resistance in every front of the social-class war. And as such we will defend them forcefully and organized with every means possible.
